Hungarian-Canadian Cultural Society of the Okanagan
A Brief History
Statistics Canada reports that there are about 17,000 people of Hungarian descent in the BC
Interior and 53,000 province wide.
The Okanagan Hungarian Cultural Society was established in 1981 by members of the of the ‘56 Generation, under the name of Magyar Klub. The Society has been operating from its present site on Ross Road since 2002. It serves as the cultural anchor of Hungarian Canadians living in the Interior of British Columbia to help preserve our cultural heritage, language and traditions, and pass on our identity to the younger generations.
We host cultural events, entertainment often with performers from Hungary, commemorations, various clubs and dinners. Three major historical events are remembered each year along withholding an Annual Harvest Ball attended by Canadians as well as other ethnic groups.
The newly-opened Hungarian Language School is getting more and more popular, and so are thecooking classes. The Society was one of the first partakers of Canada Day celebrations atProspera Place. The long lineups for our famous “Langos” and Hungarian Smokies continue.
